The Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur has developed the app for National Digital Library of India wherein anybody with a smartphone can download it and access an exhaustive knowledge repository immediately.

The project, which was initiated by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, now boasts text books from eight state education boards, NCERT textbooks, previous exam papers of JEE, GATE and UPSC and research papers published from institutes like Indian Institute of Science (IISc), audio-books and more.

Speaking to the Times of India, P P Chakraborty, director of the institution, notes that the app is inclusive and makes access to knowledge possible for anyone with a smartphone. He says, "With the exponential growth in mobile usage, the NDL app will enable access to rich digital content of libraries across the country and even foreign repositories to users even in the remotest of areas, which is unique not just in the Indian, but also in the global context. The world has never seen a digital repository like NDL, which is focused on education." The app, which has been downloaded over 1,00,000 times, was launched about a month ago and is currently only available for Android users. The team behind the app says that there will soon be a version out for Apple products too. It can also be accessed through computers and laptops. Users can search for content using various parameters like subject matter, source, content type and more. Right now, the app is available in three languages - English, Hindi and Bengali.
