The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has opened registration for the second session of its ‘Young Scientist Programme,’ also called Yuva Vigyani Karyakram (YUVIKA), which aims to provide a platform for young students to study space-related theories, activities and technologies.
The two-week programme will last from May 11-22, across any one of the ISRO/DOS (Department of Space) centres located at Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Shillong and Thiruvananthapuram, and offer a wide range of learning opportunities that will include talks from experts, practicals, facility and lab visits and feedback sessions.
Three students from each State and Union Territory will be selected for the programme that will cover CBSE, ICSE and State syllabus. Five additional seats are reserved for Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) candidates across the country.
Online Registration
Interested students can register online on ISRO’s official website. The results will be announced on 2 March.
Students will have to upload attested e-copies of relevant certificates on or before 23 March. The final list of the candidates will be out on 30 March after the verification of certificates.

Eligibility & Criteria
Pupils who have passed Class 8, and are currently studying in Class 9 (in the academic year 2019-20) will be eligible for the programme.
They will be marked on a point-based system based on five criteria outlined by ISRO:
- Performance in the 8th Std Examination: 60%
- Prize in school events conducted by the School or Education board from the year 2016 onwards (like Elocution, Debate, Essay Writing….) at District/State/National/ International Level: 2/4/6/10%
- Winners of District/State/National/International Level sports activities conducted by School or Education board from the year 2016 onwards: 2/4/6/10%
- Scouts and Guides/NCC/NSS Member – during the current academic year (2019-2020): 5%
- Studying in Rural School located in Block/Village Panchayath area: 15%
Things to note:
- Students studying in a rural school should provide a certificate of proof from the head of the school.
- Students from rural areas have been given special weightage in the selection criteria.
- In case there is a tie between the selected candidates, the younger candidates will be given priority.
- The selected students will be accommodated in ISRO guest houses/hostels.
- Expenditure towards commute, course material, lodging and boarding, etc., during the entire course, will be borne by ISRO.
The last date to apply for the programme is 24 February.
